About Us

Soweto Youth Initiative is a registered community-based organization. It was started in 1999 by Julius Odero as a scout movement club by the name of "Soweto Club". It later changed to the name we know today as the organization grew beyond the scout movement. Its main aim is to nurture and empower the community, the youth, as well as disabled people so that they all can become responsible citizens through social, physical and spiritual development.

I was born and raised in the slums of Nairobi in Kenya and I am the second born in a family of two. My mother was not able to provide for me and my brother so sometimes we slept hungrily and went to school with an empty stomach. This lead us to run away to my grandma's place to live there and see if things would get better. Still, things were not that good there either because my grandma could not work due to her age. Sometimes I would go to school with no shoes and torn clothes which was a huge challenge for me. It came to a time after school when I went out looking for a job to contribute with some food at home. Right now I am a volunteer at the Soweto Youth Initiative. What motivates me is that when I was a kid in the slums I was welcomed and mentored at SYI. This motivated me to come back and give back to the organization and help and support the young kids from my slum. My goal is to make sure that the children at the organization get a good life and enjoy their childhood.
