About Us

Soweto Youth Initiative is a registered community-based organization. It was started in 1999 by Julius Odero as a scout movement club by the name of "Soweto Club". It later changed to the name we know today as the organization grew beyond the scout movement. Its main aim is to nurture and empower the community, the youth, as well as disabled people so that they all can become responsible citizens through social, physical and spiritual development.

Head of Interact With Me & Sanitary Towels Program

My name is Mercy Muraga and I am 20 years old. I am the third born in a family of four and I grew up with both my mum and dad. My mother is a meat vendor while my dad is a casual laborer. Through these jobs, they used to provide for us food and ensured we were educated at least until we completed high school. Survival was really tough but we can't complain, they did their best.
As of now, I have completed my high school studies and I'm waiting to join University but as I wait, I do service in my community through Soweto Youth Initiative and part-time do casual jobs.
What motivates me to volunteer in SYI is to make sure girls like me get the opportunity to go to school and later graduate from University! I really like the vision the organization has for them. We help them in their day to day challenges and make sure they feel comfortable when going to school.
