About Us

Soweto Youth Initiative is a registered community-based organization. It was started in 1999 by Julius Odero as a scout movement club by the name of "Soweto Club". It later changed to the name we know today as the organization grew beyond the scout movement. Its main aim is to nurture and empower the community, the youth, as well as disabled people so that they all can become responsible citizens through social, physical and spiritual development.

Vasco Calixto

"Feed a Child" Coordinator & Ambassador

Hey there! My name is Vasco, I'm 19 years old and I am from Portugal. After finishing my Highschool studies, I decided I had to get out of my comfort zone and embark on a journey that would forever change my life. After working for a few months I went traveling and had the opportunity to volunteer with amazing projects around the world. One of these projects was the Soweto Youth Initiative, where I spent about 1 month. The work that is done here moved me and the hardships that the children have to endure made me vow that I would continue to help them even after I left Kenya. Because of that, we're building a team of international ambassadors that can promote SYI abroad and get them the funds that they need. I helped build and organize this website, and currently, I'm the coordinator of the "Feed a Child" Program, giving continuation to the fantastic job started by Lea. We want to be able to provide food to all the kids in Soweto daily, so they don't have to go to bed hungry every night. Currently, I'm also an Economics' Graduate student in Lisbon.
